Obituary for Alan Surma

Alan Surma, 65 of Waubay died on February 14, 2018 at a Sioux Falls Hospital.

His funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 19, 2018 at Egeland Lutheran Church near Waubay, Bob Grebel will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster on Sunday 5-7 P.M. ending with a 7 P.M. prayer service.

Alan Neil Surma was born on April 3, 1952 to Stanley and Mildred (Olson) Surma at Peabody Memorial Hospital in Webster, South Dakota. The family lived south of Waubay in Egeland Township, Day County. He was baptized and confirmed at Egeland Lutheran Church. He attended country school near his home and graduated from Waubay High School in 1970 where he was also known as “Hutch” After high school he farmed with his father on the family farm.

In 1981 he married Jean Bearhill. The couple lived in Waubay and he farmed and worked at the American Legion. To this union two daughters were born, Jessica and Kellye. In 1993 he began working as a rural mail carrier out of the Waubay Post Office. On December 19, 2009 he was united in marriage to Yulia Klimenko of the Ukraine. The couple made their home on Blue Dog Lake, Waubay. He was currently still carrying mail in the Waubay area at the time of his death.

He was a member of Egeland Lutheran Church near Waubay. He enjoyed hunting and making hunting trips to Wyoming and Montana, fishing, boating and watching the Minnesota Vikings, his favorite football team. He especially loved being with his grandchildren.

Alan passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 65 years, 10 months and 11 days.

Survivor include his wife, Yulia of Waubay; two daughters, Jessica (Eric) Sundahl of Slayton, MN and Kellye Surma of Sioux Falls, SD; six grandchildren, Addison and Ethan Sundahl, Jadyn Surma, Jordan, Kason and Keagan Vortherms; two brothers, Stuart (DeeAnn) Surma of Java, SD and John (Cindy) Surma of Rapid City, SD; four sisters, Carolyn (Jack) Kennedy of Watertown, SD, Mary Barse of Sioux Falls, SD, Gayle (Brian) Wordes of Sacred Heart, MN and Sandy Surma of Houston, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Steve.
