Clara Acker

February 18, 1929 — August 1, 2016

Clara Acker, 87 of Watertown and formerly of Webster died on Monday, August 01, 2016 at Jenkins Living Center in Watertown. Memorial services will be at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Webster, Rev. Mike DeKraai will officiate. Inurnment will be at Webster Cemetery. Memorial visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Clara Belle Wang was born on February 18, 1929 to John and Elvira (Peterson) Wang in Webster, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church h in Webster. She attended grade school and graduated from Webster High School in 1947. Following graduation, she was employed by Satrum’s Jewelry Store in Webster. In 1949, Clara attended The Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota and graduated in 1951. In May of 1951, she accepted a call to serve as Parish Worker in First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Continuing to teach, Clara also progressed with night classes and summer schooling to earn her Bachelor of Science Degree. In the fall of 1963, Clara accepted a position to tech in the Longview, Washington School District. Here the fifth year of schooling was required. Along with teaching, she took classes during the year and summers. Taking a leave of absence, Clara went to earn her Masters of Science Degree at Oregon College of Education in Monmouth, Oregon. Returning to her teaching in the Longview School District, throughout her years she taught fourth grade at Robert Gray, Northlake, and St. Helens where she also enjoyed teaching third grade. In 1971, after being apart for 25 years, Clara’s first sweetheart came back into her life and in August of 1973, she was married to Harry Acker. She continued teaching and in 1983 was stricken with cancer. Having weekend treatments, Clara continued teaching until the end of the school year in 1984. At this time she took early retirement to continue healing. With strong support from her husband and doctor, the battle with cancer was won, and a full and happy life was enjoyed. Clara is survived by three nieces and five great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2006, one sister and two brothers.
