Mavis Mahlen, 85 of Webster died on Wednesday, November 01, 2017 at Strand-Kjorsvig Community Rest Home in Roslyn. Her funeral will be at 10:30 A.M. Friday, November 3. 2017 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Webster, Rev. Mike DeKraai officiating. Burial will be in Webster Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday 5-7 P.M. ending with a 6:45 prayer service. Mavis Ione Gilbertson was born on September 5, 1932 to Elmer and Julia (Monshaugen) Gilbertson at Roslyn, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Fron Lutheran Church near Roslyn. She attended grade school in Roslyn and graduated from Roslyn High School in 1950. She attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen and received her teaching certificate and then taught country school for four years. She was united in marriage to Curtis Mahlen on November 15, 1952 at Fron Lutheran Church. After their marriage the couple made their home on a farm near Roslyn. They moved to Webster in 1956. In 1964 they purchased an acreage north of Webster where she was currently residing. She was employed at the medical clinic in Webster for twenty eight years, retiring in 1984. During that time she assisted her husband with his business. After his death in 1993 she went back to work at Lake Area Hospital (now Sanford Hospital) in 1994 as a Medical Transcriptionist and worked until her retirement in October 2013. She was a past member of Fron Lutheran Church near Roslyn where she was church organist from the age of fourteen. When she moved to Webster she became a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she was an active member of L.C.W, Circle, Senior Choir and served on the Church Council. She also served as Treasurer of the Day County Cancer Society for several years. She was a past member of the Junior Websterian Study Club for several years. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, cooking, baking, quilting at church, doing crossword puzzles and spending time with her family and many friends. Mavis passed away on Wednesday, November 01, 2017 at Roslyn, South Dakota at the age of 85 years, 1 month and 27 days. Survivors include special family, Wayne Wasilk and Chad Wasilk of Roslyn, SD and Nikki (Jamie) Kwasniewski and their children, Ben, Kara and Kala of Webster, SD; brothers-in-law, Virgil (Geraldine) Mahlen and Darwin Giese both of Watertown, SD; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
