Carl Monteith

Carl Raymond Monteith was born on Tuesday, March 8, 1932 to Carl and Dollie (Hart) Monteith on the family farm in Eden Township, Clark County, South Dakota near Garden City. When he was a small child the family moved to a farm northwest of Henry. He attended school in Henry and graduated from Henry High School in 1950. After graduation he worked as a carpenter for Ted Coyle. In November 1955 he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He took his basic training at Ft. Carson, Colorado, then was stationed at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, Ft. Niagara, New York and then to Japan for a year. He was honorably discharged in September 1957. On October 27, 1957 he married Geraldine “Gerry” Jackson at the Vienna Lutheran Church in Vienna, South Dakota. After their marriage he began working for Gambles Company and worked at stores in Watertown, Morris, Minnesota, Williston and Mandan, North Dakota and in 1962 moved to Webster to manage the store there. While with Gambles he won an award for outside sales. Then he operated a bait shop for a short time and worked construction for Schull and Gray Construction Companies. He also worked for Bechtel Corporation at the Big Stone power plant, and in Webster for Mereen Johnson Foundry, Don Daly’s Fleet Farm Store, and at Hardware Hank Store until retirement. After retirement he did odd jobs for people. He was always ready to help others. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Webster and served on the Trustee Board. He was active in the church and would say “I’m going to help God” when asked for his volunteer help. He was a Life Member of Webster V.F.W. Post 4690 where he served as Commander. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather in his own sweet way. He loved to spent time hunting and fishing with family and friends. Carl passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2005 at Webster, South Dakota at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 5 days. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Geraldine of Webster; three sons, Bradley (Lois) Monteith of Andover, SD, Marshall (Karen) Monteith of Greensboro, MD and Warren (Karen) Monteith of Denton, MD; a brother, Howard (Betty) Monteith of Great Falls, MT; three grandsons, Kevin (Sheila) Monteith of Brookings, SD, Aaron Monteith of Rapid City, SD and Kyle Monteith of Brookings, SD; two granddaughters, Tiffany and Melanie Monteith of Greensboro, MD; and two step-granddaughters, Christen and Jessica Willey of Denton, MD. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Olin, Leo, Dwight and Duane and a sister-in-law, Edith.
