Dorothy Thomas was born to Frank and Dorothy Thomas on December 1, 1919. Having been raised in the Catholic faith, she attended the parochial school in Webster and graduated from high school in 1937. Then it was on to college in Springfield and after many summer school sessions at Northern State College while teaching, she graduated Cum Laude in 1970. During World War II, being patriotic, she took knitting lessons from the Red Cross and made olive drab mittens and scarves for the soldiers. Then she took sheet metal lessons and was sent to Hill Field, Utah (Hill Air Force Base), but having secretarial skills she was quickly assigned to a clerical position in the personnel department. After that assignment ended, she moved to Los Angeles CA to work for the government agency that controlled rationing during the war. After a lengthy romance with the love of her life Cyle Hinze, they married on May 21, 1944, thus beginning the love affair that would last over 64 years. To this union one daughter was born. When the war was over, Cyle and Dorothy returned to the Hinze family farm south of Webster, where they remained until 2002. During many of those years she was a devoted educator with a passion for wanting her students to have the best education possible. She was a very creative and artistic lady that loved to paint , sew and always had a colorful and beautiful garden. Always the lover of music, she and Cyle square danced and ballroom danced most of their married life. After they retired, they spent many winters in either Texas or Arizona.. Dorothy was a loving wife and special mother. She is survived by her husband Cyle and daughter Marlene Stadler both of Watertown SD. Condolences may be sent to Cyle Hinze at 500 16th Ave NE #34 Watertown SD 57201.
