WAUBAY- Gerald Hamman 70, of Waubay, died on Sunday, April 01, 2007, at Milbank Area Hospital in Milbank, S.D. His funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, April 5, 2007 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Waubay, Janet Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Lakewood Cemetery, Waubay. Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster on Wednesday 4-8 P.M. and prior to the services on Thursday. Gerald Gene Hamman was born on Thursday, September 18, 1936 to Emil and Alma (Holzerland) Hamman on the family farm in Central Point Township, Day County, South Dakota south of Waubay. He attended country school near his home and also attended Waubay High School. He moved to the Sacremento, California area and worked in the canneries, then to Montana where he worked for farmers and then to the Black Hills where he worked for Homestake Gold Mine and in logging. In September 1959 he married Rita Walton. In October 1959 he entered the U.S. Army and served in France during the Bay of Pigs incedent. After his discharge in January 1962 the couple continued living in the Black Hills for a short time and then moved to Webster. In 1966 they moved to the Hamman family farm. He worked for Bagley Elevator in Waubay, worked on road construction and then began farming the family farm. Rita passed away in January 1973. On October 20, 1973 he married Carol Gebur at Waubay. After their marriage they continued living and farming the Hamman farm. He retired from active farming because of health reasons in 2002. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and gardening. He also followed his son in highschool basketball. Gerald passed away on Sunday, April 1, 2007 at Milbank, South Dakota at the age of 70 years, 6 months and 13 days. Survivors include his wife, Carol of Waubay; one son, Kevin Hamman of Watertown, SD; two brothers, Wallace (June) Hamman of Watertown, SD and Gene Hamman of Livingston, MT; and a granddaughter, Kaylee. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1st wife, an infant son, two brothers, Alvin and Harold and one sister, Caroline.
