WEBSTER- Glen Carlis, 83 of Webster passed away Friday, April 12, 2019 at his home in Webster. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday April 17, 2019 at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster. Burial will be in the Webster Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:00 A.M. Wednesday and continue until the service. Glen Thomas Carlis was born on February 19, 1936 to Virgil “Pat” and Leona (Thornhill) Carlis at Peabody Hospital in Webster, South Dakota. He attended Webster School and graduated in 1954. Glen loved Webster and was especially proud to have participated in all sports earning his “W” white letter. After high school, he went on to South Dakota State University in Brookings and then transferred to the University of South Dakota in Vermillion to obtain his degree in business. In 1958, Glen married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Anna May Riddle who he loved and adored all his life. Glen joined the United States National Guard and followed in his father’s footsteps and managed Anthony’s department stores in Billings, Montana, Lawton, Oklahoma, and Sterling, Colorado. In 1965, the couple welcomed their only child Vicki into this world. The family returned to Webster in 1966, when Glen and Anna May took ownership of Anthony’s Dept. Store in Webster. Glen was elated to come back to Webster and raise his daughter in his hometown. In the 1980’s, Anthony’s chain store was bought out, Glen was encouraged by his dear friends and brothers-in-law Robert and Jess Riddle to attend Gemology School in Santa Monica, California. Upon completion, Glen became the full time Gemologist and Supervising Manager for the Riddles Jewelry Stores. Glen and Anna May’s daughter married Quentin Bury. The couple had a son Brady, who was the apple of Glen’s eye! Brady could always bring a huge smile to Glen’s face; he was his grandfather’s pride and joy. He was a member of the United Methodist Church where he especially loved teaching Sunday School, helping with youth group, and working on various projects in the church. Before Glen’s stroke at the age of 59 years, he enjoyed restoring the Peabody Gardens at Pickerel Lake. He liked carpentry, landscaping, hunting, fishing, and above all else spending time with his family and friends. He cherished the many family trips they took over the years and eating every dessert in sight! Glen will be lovingly remembered as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will for forever loved and greatly missed by his wife of 61 years Anna May Carlis, daughter Vicki (Quentin) Bury and grandson Brady Bury all of Webster, SD, one sister Patty Cronk of Mt. Pleasant, SC, one brother Jack (Millie) Carlis of Sioux Falls, SD, one brother-in-law Rich (Marian) Riddle of Watertown, SD, two sisters-in-law; Carole Riddle and Joyce Riddle both of Rapid City, SD, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Gene Carlis.
