Harvey Burns

RAPID CITY- Harvey Burns, 78 of Rapid City and formally of Webster died on Sunday, June 3, 2007 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be at 2:30 P.M. Friday, June 8, 2007 at Fiksdal Funeral Chapel in Webster, Rev. William Olsen officiating. Visitation will at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster one hour prior to services on Friday. Harvey George Burns was born on Monday, August 26, 1928 to Fred and Cora (Kinsman) Burns at Lake City, South Dakota. The family lived on several farms in Day County where he attended country school. The family then moved to Webster where he attended high school. In 1947 he entered the U.S. Navy where he began as a Seaman and worked through the ranks and was commissioned an officer on the USS St. Paul in 1960 at Charlotte, South Carolina. On April 5, 1960 he married the former Louise McCarlson at Waubay, South Dakota. After their marriage Harvey continued with his career in the Navy. He was a Supply Officer for the ships and bases he was stationed at, including, China Lake, California, Athens, Georgia, North Island, California, and finally at Gulf Port, Mississippi where he retired in 1971 at the rant of Lieutenant after 23 years of service. After his discharge the couple made their home in Klamath Falls, Oregon where he worked as a purchasing agent for Columbia Plywood Company. They then moved to Dallas, Oregon where he worked for Evergreen International Airlines at McMinnville, Oregon where he was in purchasing and sales of airline parts. They moved to Valencia, California where he continued in the same business. In 1989 he retired and they moved to Webster, South Dakota. In 1997 he moved to Sioux Falls and then to Rapid City where he was residing at the time of his death. He loved playing cards, was an avid Bridge player and also played pinochle and cribbage. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans and The Retired Officers Association. Harvey passed away on Sunday, June 3, 2007 at Rapid City, South Dakota at the age of 78 years, 9 months and 8 days. Survivors include his wife, Louise of Aberdeen, SD; one son, Tom (Heather) Burns of Edmonds, WA; two daughters, Penny (Ron) Maupin of Camano Island, WA and Lynne (Bill) Messer of Chapel Hill, NC; one brother, Don (Louise) Burns of Webster, SD; two sisters, Evelyn Ditmanson of Watertown, SD and Helen Arten of Webster, SD; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Fred, one brother, Ron and two sisters, Iva and Lucille.
