Maynard Syhre

December 17, 1927 — November 6, 2013

Maynard Syhre, 85 of Watertown and formerly of Webster died on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Golden Living Center in Watertown. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 9, 2013 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Webster. Burial will be in the Webster Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday 5-7 P.M. with a 7 P.M. prayer service. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday prior to services. Maynard Eugene Syhre was born on Saturday, December 17, 1927 to Olof and Emma (Flattum) Syhre on the family farm near Langford, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at Falnes Lutheran Church. He attended country school in Independence Township and then attended Pierpont High School. After he received his education he farmed with his father on the family farm and briefly worked at John Morrell in Sioux City, Iowa. On December 11, 1949 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Hanson at Butler, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple made their home near Pierpont where he farmed and worked construction. In 1950 they moved to a farm south of Webster and then in 1959 they purchased a farm northwest of Roslyn. In 1973 he retired from farming for health reasons and the couple moved to Webster. He did carpenter work and other odd jobs for people. He could fix anything that was asked of him. Beginning in 1982 the couple would spend winters in Arizona where he also was engaged in carpenter work. In 1992 The couple moved to Watertown where he continued carpentry and mowing lawns. In May 2011 he entered Golden Living Center in Watertown. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Watertown and was caretaker at Fron Lutheran Church near Roslyn when they lived there. He served on the Community Oil Co. Board of Directors and was a Liberty Township Supervisor. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Aberdeen and the Sons of Norway in Webster and Watertown. He loved fishing, especially ice fishing and hunting, playing cards, landscaping and gardening. He also loved playing games and cards with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Maynard passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Watertown, South Dakota at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 20 days. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Watertown; two sons, DeWayne Syhre of Bowdle, SD and Danny (Gretchen) Syhre of Denver, IA; one daughter, Deanne (Keith) Gould of Upton, WY; one brother, Levern (Hazel) Syhre of Webster, SD; one sister, Luella Burns of Coon Rapids, MN; 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Clifford and one sister, Emogene Ives.
