Richard Evenson

WAUBAY- Richard Evenson, 86 of Waubay died on Monday, November 20, 2006 at his home. His funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. Friday, November 24, 2006 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Waubay, Janet Miller will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in Lakewood Cemetery, Waubay. Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster on Thursday 6-8 P.M. and prior to services on Friday at the church. Richard Warren Evenson was born on Thursday, April 22, 1920 to Louie and Martha (Lundby) Evenson at Webster, South Dakota. The family made their home on a farm in Highland Township, Day County, south of Webster. He was baptized at St. Pauli Lutheran Church and confirmed at Lily Lutheran Church. He attended country school near his home, Lily High School and then graduated from Webster High School in 1938. In May 1942 he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps where he was an aircraft mechanic and served stateside during World War II. After he was honorably discharged in December 1945 he returned to Webster. He attended Mitchell Business College and then worked at General Mills in Webster. On December 1, 1946 he married Harriet Holland at Tabor Lutheran Church near Webster. After their marriage the couple made their home in Webster where he worked for Anderson Feed & Seed. In 1952 the couple moved to Waubay where he managed Bagley Elevator. In 1959 he began serving Waubay as a rural mail carrier for 21 years until his retirement in 1980. After retirement the couple enjoyed spending their winters in Texas. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church were he served in various positions, including Council President and Treasurer. He also was a member of Brady-Monson Post 129 American Legion and the Rural Mail Carrier’s Association. He enjoyed following the Minnesota Twins baseball and following his grandchildren’s school activities. He was a jack of all trades including maintaining his cars and lawn, building the family home which he completed in 1968 and assisting others with carpentry projects. He was a devoted husband, dad and grandpa. Richard passed away on Monday, November 20, 2006 at Waubay, South Dakota at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 28 days. Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife, Harriet of Waubay, his children and grandchildren, Russell and wife, Jan of San Antonio, TX and their children, Heather and Eric, Kenneth and wife, Linda of Bismarck, ND and their daughter, Laura, Mary Ann and husband Larry Aker of Waubay, SD and their children, Laurie, Steven, Amy, Jenna and Kelsey, David and his wife, JoEllen of Gillette, WY and their children, Richard, David, Scott, Alex and Adam, and Mark and his wife, Catherine of Oakdale, MN; three great grandchildren; one brother Jay and his wife, Selma of Webster, SD; and a step-brother, Darrel Lundby and his wife Joanne of Spokane, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents.
