Rose Rehn

Rose Rehn 97 of Webster died Saturday September 28, 2013 at Sanford Hospital in Webster. Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday October 5, 2013 at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster, Reverends Eugene and Marilyn Moeller will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Milbank City Cemetery. Rose Evelyn (Carston) Rehn was born on April 30, 1916, to Andrew Olaf and Ellen Louise (Kjenaas) Carston at their home in Portland township, Deuel County, South Dakota. She was the third of nine children. She passed away on September 28, 2013 at Sanford Hospital, Webster, SD. Rose grew up in rural South Dakota where she lived the majority of her life. She considered her home as Big Stone Lake, South Dakota. She spent her childhood primarily at Hartford Beach on Big Stone Lake and attended Geneseo Twp. Rural school with her sisters and brothers. After she married Arthur Rehn, they continued to make their home on Big Stone Lake, having houses at both Hartford Beach and Hiawatha Beach, until 2005 when she sold her Hiawatha Beach home to her niece Anne. Her nephew Dan now owns the Hartford Beach home. Rose worked for numerous people in the area as a young woman. She married Art at the military chapel at Ft. Snelling, Minneapolis, Minnesota, on November 21, 1942. They lived for a short time in Minneapolis until they returned to South Dakota where they lived the remainder of their lives. Rose enjoyed spending time with Art , especially the hunting and fishing trips they often took. She also opened their home to her many nieces and nephews who came to learn how to fish, swim, and to appreciate the outdoors. In addition to living in Minneapolis, they lived in Milbank until 1956 when Art began working for the SD Game Fish and Parks. They lived at Estelline, Ft. Sisseton, and Richmond Lake when Art was with the parks department. In 1963 they moved to Timber Lake when Art became a game warden. Later Rose was to become the caretaker of Little Moreau Park near Timber Lake where she worked until retiring in 1976. They moved to Webster and lived in a mobile home on the farm of her niece Carol and family. After Art passed away, she moved in with Carol and family and lived with them until 1991 when she moved to Pleasant View apartments. In 2011 she moved to Bethesda Nursing Home, Webster, where she lived the remainder of her life. Rose loved the outdoors. She delighted in taking the “kids” fishing and made sure that they all learned how to both catch and clean fish. She also enjoyed having friends over and playing cards and especially enjoyed the large family gatherings held at least twice a year at Big Stone Lake. She “adopted” many other young people who came to know her as “Aunt Rose.” She and her sisters loved the time they could spend with each other as they grew older, and the family knew they could usually find them together at Grandpa’s house at Hartford Beach if they weren’t at their respective homes. Rose was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She will be buried in the Milbank City cemetery, Milbank South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers Olaf and Thomas, sisters Anna Marie, Louise, Lucille, and Ella Mae. She is survived by sisters Florence Fagrelius, Sioux Falls, and Katherine Adams, Brooklyn Center, MN, sister-in-law Barbara Carston, brother-in-law Albert Russell, several nieces and nephews, and many friends.
