Verda Pitzl

Verda Pitzl, 69 of Sioux Falls and formerly of Waubay died on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. Memorial services will be at 10:30 A.M. Friday, September 30, 2016 at Fiksdal Funeral Chapel in Webster, Rev. Dennis Groeneweg will officiate. Inurnment of Verda and Roger's cremains will be at Lakewood Cemetery. Verda May Pierce was born on June 19, 1947 to Frank Eugene and Lyle Ramona (Corbin) Pierce at Caldwell Hospital in Webster, South Dakota. Verda was raised on the family farm south of Waubay where she attended Wheatland No. 171 country school through the fifth grade. Following graduation from Waubay High School in 1965, she was employed at Land O’Lakes Creameries Northeast Minneapolis Office and Northern States Power Company in St. Paul, Minnesota. Verda was baptized, confirmed and married at Egeland Lutheran Church south of Waubay. She was united in marriage to Roger Maurice Pitzl of St. Paul, Minnesota on June 18, 1966. They made their home in St. Paul and rural areas of Minnesota and South Dakota, Watertown, South Dakota and Riverton, Wyoming. She did clothing alterations, hair care, babysitting, laundry, housekeeping and lawn care wherever they lived and especially honored to help the elderly. The couple moved to Waubay in 1974 and the family became members of the Waubay Community Alliance Church where Verda served as deaconess for 20 years until the closing of the church in October 1999. When Verda’s mother suffered a stroke in 1984, the family took her into their home until 1986 when she was moved to Mary’s Place, a foster care home for elderly in Waubay where Verda was employed until 1988. Mrs. Pierce then returned to the Pitzl home where she resided until her death in May 1992. Verda was the manager and caretaker of the Waubay Housing apartment units in Waubay from 1989 to 1997, then was employed in environmental services at Bethesda Nursing Home and Heritage Village in Webster from 1998 until her retirement in 2012. Her husband, Roger passed away in February 2005. After his death she remained in Waubay until her health failed and she moved to Sioux Falls in 2012. Verda passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 69 years, 3 months and 8 days. Survivors include two sons, Daniel (Cheryl) Pitzl of Harrisburg, SD and Kent (Kacie) Pitzl of Black Duck, MN; one daughter, Sandra (Paul) Sullivan of Wichita, KS; eight grandchildren, Lukas, Dominick, Veronica and Jakob Pitzl, Katherine Sullivan, Nathan, Karlyle and Karina Pitzl; three brothers, Robert Pierce of Waubay, SD, Verlan (Deb) Pierce of Milbank, SD and Leon Pierce of Valley Center, KS; three sisters, Ramona (Richard) Pitzl of Hendricks, MN, Alta (Dennis) Thomas of Sioux Falls, SD and Sherrie Pierce of Wichita, KS; two brothers-in-law, Lawrence (Fran) Pitzl of Wabasso, MN and Russell (Linda) Pitzl of Hendricks, MN; a sister-in-law, Katherine (Frank) Peppersack of Parkers Prairie, MN; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a sister-in-law, Linda Pierce.
