Alva Donald “Don” Nash was born on Friday, October 28, 1932 to William Gilbert and Lulu Elizabeth (Corbin) Nash on the family farm near Lily in Clark County, South Dakota. He was baptized at Lily Lutheran Church. He attended country school near his home and graduated from Lily High School in 1951. On November 2, 1952 he was united in marriage to Gloria McCarlson at Tabor Lutheran Church near Webster. After their marriage the couple made their home on the Nash family farm. Don served for two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After basic training he was stationed in Germany where he served in the First Infantry as a rifleman. After he was honorably discharge in 1953 he returned and they made their home in Webster. He found a job pumping gas and doing mechanic work for the Phillips 66 service station on the corner of SD Highway 25 and US Highway 12. Later, he took over the management of the station and continued to operate the business until September 1990 when Community Oil purchased the property. In 1991, Don began working for Day County Soil Conservation where he helped maintain newly planted tree windbreaks throughout the county. He retired in 2011 because of ill health. He was a long-time member of Herbert McKennett Post 40 American Legion. He also was a member of the Webster Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was a former Webster Jaycee member. Don will be remembered for his thirty one years of service at Phillips 66. Everyone was greeted with a smile and pulled away from the pumps with a clean windshield. He was a kind and generous man who was always willing to help a friend in need. Over the past few years he enjoyed taking trips to Arizona to visit his brother and sister-in-law. His greatest joy were his children and grandchildren. Survivors include one son, Dan ( Lana) Nash of Waubay, SD; two daughters, Renae ( Jim) Dale of Florence, SD and Dawn ( Adrian Rumpza) Nash of Webster, SD; one brother, Lee ( Jean) Nash of Benson, AZ; two sisters, Leila Marshall of Portland, OR and Marilou ( David) Gilbert of Madison, SD; three grandchildren, Amber Allen Nash Aaron ( Kelly Stanga) Dale; and many nieces and nephews.
