Clayton Cussons

January 23, 1919 — January 10, 2015

Clayton Cussons, 95 of Estelline and formerly of Webster died on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Estelline Nursing and Care Center. Memorial services will be at 4:00 P.M. Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the United Methodist Church in Webster, Rev. Lynn Lutz and Rev. Matt Pribyl will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date at Webster Cemetery. Friends may visit with family members at the funeral home on Wednesday 6-7 P.M. closing with a 7 P.M. prayer service. Clayton Jackson Cussons was born on Thursday, January 23, 1919, to Jackson and Myrle (Culberton) Cussons in Stewartville, Minnesota. The family moved to Webster when he was thirteen and graduated from Webster High School in 1939. Shortly after, moving to California where he was employed at Lockheed Aeronautics, returning to Webster and entering the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943. He was stationed stateside during World War II. While stationed at Ouachita Baptist College as a cadet, he met Opal B Crutchfield, marrying her on November 18, 1944 in Webster. Upon discharge from the military in 1946, the couple returned to Webster where Clayton joined his father in the operation of Cussons Feed & Seed. Clayton took over the family business upon his father’s death and operated it until his late 80’s. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Webster, and recently joined his daughter at Westside Wesleyan Church in Bristol. He was an active member of Webster Kiwanis Club, Yelduz Shrine Band, Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, and the American Legion. Most of all he loved people, welcoming them to our community and entertaining. He loved his family, playing piano, singing, and cooking. He brought great joy to those around him with his upbeat view of life. Clayton passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at the Estelline Nursing Care Center in Estelline, South Dakota. He was 95 years, 11 months and 18 days old. He will be dearly missed. Survivors include one son, Jackson (Susan) Cussons of Excelsior, MN; three daughters, Carolyn Shultis of Webster, SD, Cathy (Rick) Martin of Irving, TX and Julie (Mike) Sarrett of Goodlettsville, TN; nine grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Opal, and his sister, Ann.
