Darrell D. Pies, 67 of Ortley died on Monday, September 09, 2013 at his home near Ortley. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Ortley Free Lutheran Church, Robert Grebel will officiate. Interment with Military Rites will be at Ortley Cemetery. Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster on Friday 5-7 P.M. with a prayer service at 7 P.M. Darrell Dean Pies was born on Sunday, January 13, 1946 to Rudolph and Evelyn (Althoff) Pies at Webster, South Dakota. The family lived on a farm north of Ortley where he grew up with seven siblings. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Waubay. He attended Ortley Township #2 School through the eighth grade. After he received his education he worked at home on the family farm and part-time for area farmers. In December 1965 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. It was while he was in the service that he received his GED. He was honorably discharged in November 1967. Upon his return home he worked for the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department. On February 28, 1971 he was united in marriage to Bonnie Eide at Watertown, South Dakota. In the spring of 1971 he started ranching north of Ortley which turned out to be a forty two year career. He served on the Ortley Town Board for many years and the Ortley Free Lutheran Church Council. He enjoyed ranching, his horses, the sport of rodeo, family and especially his fourteen grandchildren. Darrell passed away on Monday, September 09, 2013 at his home near Ortley, South Dakota at the age of 67 years, 7 months and 27 days. He is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie; six children, Kathy (Nathan) Fitzgerald of Cooperstown, ND, Phillip Pies of Watertown, SD, Carla (Joshua) Anderson of Eden, SD, Carrie (Steve) Rumpza of Webster, SD, Leonard Pies of Sioux Falls, SD and Crystal Pies of Webster, SD; and fourteen grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brothers, one sister and a brother-in-law.
