Daryl was born in Webster, SD on September 29,1936, to Nels and Alma (Aadson) Valsvig. He was baptized in November 1936 at Lily Lutheran Church and confirmed in May of 1951. He attended grade school and high school in Lily graduating in 1955. During his high school years, Daryl participated in Basketball, Baseball, Paper Staff, Wildcat Staff, King Candidate, Class Officer, and many Plays.

Daryl married Deloris Solberg at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Bristol, SD on April 14, 1956, and to this union were born six children, Debra, Danny, Douglas, Diana, Dawna, and Darla.

Serving three years as a Wireman in the 643rd Field Artillery Battalion of South Dakota National Guard and earning a badge in Marksman, Daryl was honorably discharged in December 1958.

After marrying the love of his life, the couple farmed on the family homestead until 1974. He then went to work as a farmhand for Larry and Judy Herr, he then worked at Dakotah as a truck route driver and shipping laborer. Later in life, Daryl worked for many years at the Day County Courthouse as a part-time custodian until fully retiring in 2020.

Daryl had numerous enjoyments throughout his life. His family were his pride and joy more than anything else. In addition to his loving wife and six children, his twenty-seven grandchildren were incredibly special to him. He loved spending time with every one of them and attending his kids and grandkids sporting events. With a love for rodeos and horses, Daryl took immense pride in providing each of his kids with their own horse while they were growing up. He was a fan and enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins, Vikings, and especially the Minnesota Lynx. In his younger years, he coached grade-school basketball, and enjoyed square dancing, listening to country music, and taking his family on vacation to the Black Hills every summer. Daryl and his beloved wife enjoyed many trips with family touring the majestic scenery of the United States where he was able to see the battleship “North Carolina,” Atlantic Ocean, Biltmore Estate, Nashville, Graceland, and Gatlinburg. They traveled through several states on the Blue Ridge Parkway experiencing the stunning views and Fall foliage of the Smoky Mountains and Blue Ridge Mountains. Other adventures included the Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone National Park, Space Needle, Puget Sound, and Pacific Ocean. On those trips, one highlight for him was when he got to sit in the cockpit of an Army Blackhawk helicopter while his grandson (the pilot) explained the operation and capabilities of it. Daryl was in complete awe.

A time that Daryl had always cherished was celebrating his 60th wedding anniversary with his family at a Minnesota Twins game and seeing their anniversary highlighted on the jumbotron and his live TV interview during the game.

Preceding him in passing were his parents, Father-In-Law and Mother-In-Law Melvin and Anna (Iverson) Solberg. Brothers-In-Law John Nicolai, Harry Schmidt, and Gene Watters. Sisters-In-Law Lorraine Nicolai and Alice Schmidt. Grandson Robert “Rob” Hoover, Great-Grandson Zachary “Zach” Hoover, and Grandson-In-Law Rob Ash. Three very close friends, David Clausen, Cliff Nygaard, and Vernon Hanson (all who were like brothers to Daryl) as well as many aunts, uncles, friends, and family.

Daryl is lovingly survived by his wife of 69 years, six children, Debra (Bob) Hoover, Watertown, SD; Dan (Michelle) Valsvig, Webster, SD; Doug (Kari) Valsvig, Webster, SD; Diana (Joel) Sinner, Webster, SD; Dawna (Randy) Grimes, Watertown, SD; and Darla (Wade) Horton, Sioux Falls, SD; one sister, Karen Watters, Webster, SD; 26 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren; a very special extended family, Chris and Kisha Abbas and their 3 children; and many nieces, nephews, friends, and family.
