David "Dave" Moen

David "Dave" Moen, 80, of Waubay, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Prairie Lakes Hospital, Watertown.

Funeral services will be held 10:30am Friday, July 31, 2026, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Waubay. Interment will be at the Lakewood Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-7pm Thursday, July 30, 2026, at the funeral home.

David Orrin Moen was born on August 26, 1945, in Webster, SD to Gottfried and Maude (Brandon) Moen joining his two older siblings, Shirla and Judy. He was later joined by a third sister, Noreen. He was baptized at Saron Lutheran Church and confirmed at Roslyn Lutheran Church.

David grew up on a farm northwest of Rosyln, SD and graduated from Roslyn High School in1963. He joined the Army National Guard shortly after High School and served for six years. During that time, he moved to Minneapolis, MN and had several jobs, including road construction. In 1969 he started working for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as a telephone installer, where he worked for 14 years.

While in Minneapolis, Dave met the love of his life Janice Marie Nelson of Waubay, SD. The couple united in marriage on July 17, 1971, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Waubay, and were happily married for 55 years. They welcomed their first child, Aaron, in 1972 and their second child, Lori, in 1974.

In 1982 Dave and Jan bought the Trading Post in Waubay and moved the family from Minneapolis to Waubay. They operated the store for nearly 20 years until Highway 12 was expanded to a four lane and the State bought and demolished the property.

Dave was actively involved in the community serving on the Waubay School Board, the Waubay City Council, and regularly participated in the Trading Post coffee room discussions with the local farmers and residents.

Dave was known for his quick wit, sense of humor, great laugh, and ability to start up a discussion with nearly anyone. He made friends easily and was often sought out for deep discussions and advice. He was a very skilled, competitive card player and rarely missed a Minnesota Vikings game over the past 50 years. He was also known for his do-it-yourself mentality, his carpentry skills, and his uncanny ability to produce raw materials for any project from one of his storage buildings.

But, above all, Dave loved to spend time with his family – attending children and grandchildren events, family vacations, and holidays. His favorite place in the world was the lake cabin with everyone there. The summer lake cabin memories cover the past 40 years and is where strong family and friend bonds were forged. Dave was constantly working on a cabin improvement project, but was always ready to boat, play cards, play yard games, start a campfire, and share a good story.

Dave will be missed by his loving wife Janice Moen of Waubay, SD; two children Aaron Moen (Heather) of Sioux Falls, SD, Lori Kasuske (Greg) of Twin Brooks, SD; his grandchildren Erika Lureen (Austin), Skylar Tews (Anthony), Ashley Moen, April Moen, Maci Kasuske, and Ben Kasuske; three great-grandchildren Caleb, Luke, and Jack Lureen, with one on the way (Tews). He is also survived by his sister Noreen Oliphant(Darrell), Conifer, CO; nieces Keely Hawk Wolter (Robert), Aurora, CO, Michelle Oliphant Denver, CO, and nephew Jason Samuel, Denver, CO; extended family members, and friends who loved him deeply.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gottfried and Maude Moen; his sisters Shirla Hawk and Judy Samuel; his nephews Kevin Hawk and David Chavez; and his in-laws Edwin and Agnes (Hovland) Nelson.
