David Lauseng, 73, of Aberdeen and formerly of Waubay, passed away Monday, April 13, 2026, after a brief illness.
Private family services will be held Monday, April 20, 2026.
Public memorial visitation will be 2-4pm Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster.
David Allen Lauseng was born on October 3, 1952, to Melvin and Ruth (Manska) Lauseng in Waubay, South Dakota. As a young boy, he was severely injured in an explosion caused by a mortar shell that had been left behind—likely a war souvenir. Unaware that it was still live, he had picked it up from a shelf and dropped it. He sustained life altering injuries.
David attended school in Waubay and Michigan. Throughout his life, he lived and worked in various places across South Dakota and Michigan, holding a variety of jobs. However, his greatest passion was horses, and he was happiest working as a cowboy and tending cattle.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Donna (Herold) Lauseng; his children, Andrea Behnke (Troy Gabriel), Clinton Lauseng, Kayla Lauseng (Jacob Jorgenson), and his son, Steven Schultz, and family.
He is also survived by his brothers, Donald Lauseng and Edmund (Vicky) Lauseng; his sisters, Diane (Raymond) Gabriel, Ruth Ann Pies, Marilyn Reyelts, and Kathy Lauseng; his brother-in-law, Doug (Cathy) Herold; and his sister-in-law, Debra (Jerry) Nepodal.
David will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Dylan (Heather) Lauseng, Ethan Behnke, Dominick Gabriel, Jesse Gabriel, Jackson Gabriel, William Jorgenson, and Elora Jorgenson; as well as his great-grandchildren, Grace Lauseng, Winston Lauseng, and Lillian Behnke.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Derwin "Bob" Lauseng and sister Harriet Minder, in-laws Ernest and Irene Herold, several brothers-in law and sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
