David "Stub" Burns

David "Stub" Burns, 82, of Ortley, passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at Avantara, Watertown.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Ortley Free Lutheran Church in Ortley and will be livestreamed on Fiksdal Funeral Service Facebook page. Visitation will begin at 9:00 A.M. and continue until service time.  Interment will be at Lakewood Cemetery near Waubay.

David “Stub” Allan Burns was born on November 21, 1940, to Raymond and Laura (Wenger) Burns at Waubay, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith. He attended a country school near Waubay. After his education, Stub went to work for local construction companies, Knights Construction and Utne Roofing Company.

On November 24, 1962, he married Susan Miller at Webster, South Dakota. To this union five children were born, Theresa, Douglas, Donovan, Darin, and Donita. The family made their home in Ortley. Stub continued to work construction over the years for Kreisch Construction and Gregerson Salvage until his health declined.

Stub was an avid Minnesota Vikings and Twins fan. He enjoyed trapping, hunting, fishing, gardening, and attending pow-wows. He also had an interest in farming, which he enjoyed doing with his grandchildren. Together they raised chickens, sheep, horses, and goats. Above all else, he enjoyed time spent with his family.

David Allan Burns passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at Watertown, South Dakota at the age of 82 years, 10 months, and 5 days.

He will be greatly missed by his wife Susan of Ortley, SD, sons, Douglas (Lisa) Burns of Sioux Falls, SD, Donovan (Jonette) Burns of Belle Fourche, SD, Darin (Rachel) Burns of Sanford, NC, and Donita (Chris Burke) Dolen of Ortley, SD. He will also be missed by 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, brother, Richard Burns of Waubay, SD, and sister, Kathy Salley of Watertown, SD, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Theresa, siblings, Janet, Jerry, Delores, Donna, and Carol.
