Don "Jerry" McCreary

LANGFORD – Don "Jerry" McCreary 72 of rural Langford died suddenly Sunday February 15, 2015 at his home. His funeral will be 11 A.M. Thursday February 19, 2015 at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster. Pastor Mike McCarlson will officiate. Private inurnment will be at a later date. Visitation will be Wednesday 5-7 P.M. at the funeral home. Donald Gerald McCreary was born on Wednesday, August 5, 1942 to Donald and Virda (Parmeter) McCreary in Onaway, Iowa. He attended school in South Sioux City, Nebraska. After he received his education, in 1960 he entered the U.S. Air Force where he was an engine mechanic until his discharge in 1964. Then he worked in tower construction for nine years. During this time, Don met the love of his life while building the tower near Pierpont and staying at Pickerel Lake. He married Linda McCarlson on March 10, 1972 at Webster, South Dakota. They made their home in South Sioux City, Nebraska where Don worked at the McCreary Sawmill with his brother, David. He then began working for Burlington Northern where he was a locomotive engineer. Following his retirement from the railroad in 1988, Don and Linda moved to a farm near Langford, South Dakota. He spent his days farming and working at Farmer’s Union in Pierpont until his retirement. He also helped many local farmers. Don was a member of Tabor Lutheran Church near Webster. He was active in the Pierpont American Legion, he also enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading, car racing and napping in his favorite recliner with his beloved dogs. Don especially loved spending time with his family and friends, his greatest joy being his grandchildren. Don passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, February 15, 2015 at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 10 days. Survivors include his wife, Linda of Langford, SD; one son, Mike (Cheryl) McCreary of Webster, SD; one daughter, Wendy (Brendan) Streitz of Flandreau, SD; one sister, Jean (Tom) Lynch of Lincoln, NE; seven grandchildren, Jobi, Evan, Jaiden and Jeron McCreary of Webster, Liam, Abe and Rona Streitz of Flandreau, SD; and brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, David and Gary Lee.
