Eileen Holzerland

Eileen Holzerland, 81, of Waubay, passed away Monday, October 2, 2023, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

Her funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Fiksdal Funeral Service. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be at Lakewood Cemetery near Waubay. A luncheon will follow burial at the Waubay Community Center.

Eileen Barbara Mallery was born on April 23, 1942, to Harris and Gladys (Dahl) Mallery in Roberts County, South Dakota. Growing up she and her family attended Alto Alliance Church. She attended country school in Alto Township. As a child, she was active in 4H and helped her family in the hay fields near their home. Eileen graduated from Sisseton High School in 1960. After her education, she worked as a nurse’s aide in Watertown.

On October 19, 1963, she was united in marriage to Donald Holzerland. To this union four children were born, Lynn, Linda, Leon, and Lorin. The family made their home on a farm near Waubay. Eileen and Don were looking forward to celebrating 60 years of marriage.

Over the years Eileen worked at various places in the area including Baines Café in Webster and Walmart and Esco in Watertown. She was a very hard worker helping farm the fields, feeding calves, plus making meals, and keeping house.

Eileen loved baking especially with family around the holidays. She always had coffee on and made sure snacks and coffee were waiting for her children when they got home from school. Even while she was in the hospital, she was asking if they were getting coffee! She was a creative person with a green thumb, growing beautiful flowers at their farm.  Most recently, she took up the hobby of coloring, and doing word puzzles with Don. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her family.

Eileen passed away Monday, October 2, 2023, at Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 81 years, 5 months, and 9 days.

Her memory will forever be cherished by her husband Don of Waubay, SD, children, Lynn Holzerland of Lake Preston, SD, Linda (Kevin) Severson of Sioux Falls, SD, Leon (Ruth) Holzerland of Waubay, SD, and Lorin Holzerland of Waubay, SD. She is also survived by grandchildren, Brandon (Jamie) Weyh, Brandilyn (Will) Miller, Bryant (Courtney) Weyh, Austin Holzerland, Latina Holzerland, and Shantel Holzerland, as well as two great-grandchildren, Bentley Weyh and Cameron Weyh. She is also survived by sisters Delores Young, Janice Ellsworth, & Vivian Hove. She was preceded in death by her parents.
