Eudora (Hjellming) Olson, 87 of Webster and formerly of Ortley, died Monday August 15, 2011 at Bethesda Home in Webster. Her funeral will be 10:30A.M. Friday August 19, 2011 at Ortley Free Lutheran Church in Ortley. Burial will be in the Ortley Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday 3-5 P.M. and prior to the service on Friday.Eudora Naomi Hjellming was born on July 11, 1924 to Albert and Ora "Opal"( Stratton) Hjellming on a farm west of Peever, South Dakota. She was baptized in the home of Grandpa Stratton by Pastor Mattson. As a young child, the family moved east of Ortley, South Dakota, where she attended Ortley #1 and #4. In 1932, the family moved into Ortley, where she continued her education to the ninth grade and then transferred to Waubay High School where she obtained her high school diploma. After graduating from high school, she attended Northern State Teacher\'s College in Aberdeen, South Dakota.She taught at Garfield #3 and Ortley #3 schools. On February 8, 1958, she was united in marriage to Garreth Olson at Zion Lutheran Church in Ortley. The couple made their home in Ortley. After teaching for a few years, she took a job as postal clerk in Ortley. At the request of the Postmaster she stayed employed there for three more years as acting Postmaster. After her career with the postal service, she took a job as cashier/bookkeeper at State Bank of Waubay and retired from there in 1983. Eudora was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School and served as superintendent. She also taught Bible School and was very active in the church. Eudora and Garreth loved to dance and were members of the Square Whirlers square dance club, where she served as secretary for many years. They enjoyed deer hunting and were active members of the Lake Area Archery Club where Eudora also served as secretary. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Ortley Senior Citizens Club, to which she helped organize and served as the first president. She thoroughly enjoyed gardening and craftwork. Eudora passed away Monday August 15, 2011 at Webster, South Dakota at the age of 87 years, 1 month, and 4 days. Survivors include: sister-in-law Dorothy Hjellming of Webster, SD and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister Eldora, and one brother Lyle.
