He attended country school near his home through the fourth grade and continued at the Bristol Public School, graduating from Bristol High School in 1969.
After his education, he was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1972. Gene returned to Bristol and worked for Elmer Amberg as a milk truck driver.

Gene operated the business for 38 years, until selling it in 2012 when he took a mechanic position at Northland Auto in Webster.
Gene was a kind soul who was a friend to all. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, watching the Pittsburg Stealers, taking care of his well-manicured yard, and above all else, he enjoyed time spent with his family.
