Eugene "Jiggs" Lardy

ROSLYN- Eugene “Jiggs” Lardy, 80 of Roslyn died on Sunday, September 7, 2008 at his home in Roslyn. His funeral will be at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at Roslyn Lutheran Church in Roslyn, Janet Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Fron Lutheran Cemetery near Roslyn. Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service (fiksdalfuneral.com) in Webster on Tuesday, 5-7 P.M. and prior to services on Wednesday at the church. Eugene “Jiggs” Lardy was born November 30, 1927 to John H. and Inga (Rasmussen ) Lardy at Webster, South Dakota. He attended Roslyn public schools and graduated from Roslyn High School in 1945. He then worked for John Hanson in his produce store. He hauled eggs and chickens to Sisseton, S.D. He also skinned muskrats; getting five dollars each day and five cents for each skin. In April 1946, He was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was inducted at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis and then went to basic training at Camp Polk in Louisiana. He then attended medical technician school at Camp Atterbury, Indiana and then went to Fort Jay, New York on Governor’s Island. He then went to Fort Lewis, Wa. where he worked in the receiving office in Madigan General Hospital. His next duty station was in Washington D.C. working in the registrar’s office in the Walter Reed General Hospital. He then received his honorable discharge. In 1949, he started driving truck for the Roslyn Creamery Co. and worked part time at Stavig Service Station. On October 17, 1953 he married Joyce Bolland at Aberdeen, S.D. The couple made their home in Roslyn. “Jiggs” drove truck until 1964, when he became butter maker for the creamery. In 1966, he became manager of the creamery until 1994 when it closed. He retired that same year. He enjoyed working in his garden and yard. He loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed grilling out for his family. He was an avid sports fan, and especially enjoyed watching football. He enjoyed having coffee with his friends. He was a member of Roslyn Lutheran Church. Eugene passed away at Roslyn, South Dakota on Sunday, September 7, 2008 at the age of 80 years, 9 months, and 7 days. Survivors include his wife; Joyce of Roslyn, S.D. , three sons, Kirk (Janet) Lardy of Bristol, S.D., Todd Lardy, and Gil (Julie) Lardy of Watertown, S.D., one sister, Gertrude Cooper of Fargo, N.D., six grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jerome and Donald, and one sister, Mardell Hellwig.
