Gary Hubsch, 77, of Webster, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at Bethesda Home in Webster.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Monday, September 2, 2024, at Christ The King Catholic Church in Webster. Military interment will be at the Webster Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5-7 pm Sunday, September 1, 2024, at the funeral home.
Gary Willard Hubsch was born on April 19, 1947, to Willard and Sabina (Rumpza) Hubsch at Webster, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Otto’s Catholic Church in Webster. He attended country school and finished grade school at St. Otto’s Parochial School and graduated from Webster High School in 1965. Gary furthered his education at South Dakota State University (Go Jacks!), graduating in 1970. While in college he worked various jobs which included lead singer in the band, “The New Breed”.
On May 9, 1970, he married his best friend, Sally Brostad. The couple moved to Columbus, Georgia and Gary enlisted in the United States Army. He completed officer training at Ft. Benning, Georgia. In July, the couple moved to Lawon, Oklahoma where he worked as postal officer, in charge of ceremonies and mess officer at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma.
The couple returned to Webster where Gary was engaged in farming with his family. Gary and Sally raised their three children, Matthew James, Jessica Jean, and Samuel John on the Hubsch family homestead. Gary joined the South Dakota National Guard and was commander of the Aberdeen Unit. He continued to farm until failing health forced him to retire.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and especially trapping. He loved long country drives checking out the fields and looking at livestock. Gary was a family historian and passed on the stories of Hubsch and Rumpza lineage. He truly cherished time spent with his grandchildren.
Gary passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2024, with his daughter at his side at the age of 77 years, 4 months, and 8 days.
He will be remembered forever and lovingly missed by his wife Sally, children, Matt (Teri), Jessie (Dakotah), Sam (Jami), grandchildren, Michael, Brandon, Evan, Joey, Issac, Emily, Nathan, Jacob, Ella, and Lynnea. He is also survived by siblings, Mark (Janice), Nick (Kris), and Lori, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws Jean and Clarice Brostad, and sister-in-law Sharon Brostad.
