Germaine (Jaspers) Rice

June 30, 1936 — December 29, 2021

Elizabeth Germaine (Jaspers) Rice, age 85, died peacefully on December 29, 2021 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eden. Spring burial will be at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery near Eden.

Visitation will be 5-7 P.M. Friday January 7, 2022 at the funeral home in Webster.


Germaine was born on June 30, 1936 to Mathias and Loretta Jaspers and raised on the family farm with her four siblings in Eden, South Dakota. She graduated from Sisseton High School in 1954. Following high school she worked for the Aberdeen American News.
She was united in marriage to Laverne Rice on May 28, 1957 in Eden, SD. They moved to Omaha, Nebraska where they spent 41 years together. They were blessed with two children: Daniel and Linda.
She was an active member of Mary Our Queen parish in Omaha and Catholic Daughters. Some of her activities she enjoyed were puzzles, playing cards, crossword puzzles, reading books, going to garage sales, and singing-she had a beautiful voice. She loved attending her children's school activities and sporting events and later in life, her greatest joy were her grandsons. She was also a huge fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Germaine is survived by her children, Daniel (Angela) Rice of Kansas City, Missouri and Linda (David) Schilling of Huxley, Iowa; grandsons Kyle and Brandon Schilling; sisters Rosa Lee Opitz, Kay (Ken) Goehner; brother John (Mary Sue) Jaspers; sister-in-law Sylvia Jaspers; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband (of 41 years) Laverne; parents Mathias and Loretta Jaspers; brother Valery Jaspers; brother-in-law Melvin Opitz; nephew John D. Jaspers; and niece Rita Opitz.
A special thank you to the staff of Israel Family Hospice Home for their loving and compassionate care of Germaine.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials be sent to the family where they will be distributed as Germaine wished or to Israel Hospice Home.
