Hazel Klos, 91 of Webster died on Friday, October 14, 2011 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton. Memorial services will be at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, October 22, 2011 at American Lutheran Church in Webster, Rev. Jan FitzGibbon will officiate. Inurnment will be at Webster Cemetery. Hazel Anna Christina Backhaus was born on Wednesday, March 10, 1920 to John and Martha (Reimer) Backhaus at Pollack, South Dakota. She lived, with her family, in a sod house built by her grandfather until they moved to Webster, where her father ran a blacksmith shop. Hazel was one of five children, two brothers, Robert and Bernard and two sisters, Lorraine (Chuck) Larson and Lucille (James) DeSaer. After she received her education she helped her mother run a rooming and boarding house in Webster. Hazel married Clarence Erickson on March 3, 1944 at Pollack, South Dakota. Together they had two children, Diana (Norbert) Roth and Roger (Marcia) Erickson. Clarence passed away in May 1969. After his death she continued to live in Webster. She married Henry Klos on May 1, 1971. They continued to make their home in Webster. Henry passed away August 2003. Hazel continued to live in her home until the loss of her eyesight, when she moved to Yankton to be closer to her daughter. She was a member of American Lutheran Church in Webster where she belonged to Mary Circle. She always enjoyed family visits and always had the coffee pot on and a story or joke to share. Hazel passed away on Friday, October 14, 2011 at Yankton, South Dakota at the age of 91 years, 7 months and 4 days. Survivors include one daughter, Diana Roth of Yankton; six grandchildren, Darrin (Alyssa) Roth, Becky (Shannon) Elliott, Mathew (Jen) Roth, Julie (Mike) Thelen, Todd Erickson and Jennifer Erickson; ten great grandchildren, Jade and Austin Elliott, Cole, Keaton and Grayson Roth, Jonathon, Samantha and Elizabeth Thelen, Dakota Erickson and Donavon Erickson. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, one son, Roger, two brothers, one sister and one grandson, Kelly Roth.
