Joyce was born on May 10, 1918 to Oscar and Helen Hegna. She lived all of her life in Roberts County, except for the last 10 years where she lived in Webster and Roslyn. She graduated from Peever High School and Northern State University in Aberdeen.
Joyce married Richard Hansen of Wilmot on June 1st, 1941. After their wedding, they lived on a farm near Peever and she taught in Peever and country schools. They were blessed with two children. When they moved to Summit in 1946, she taught lower grades in Summit for 32 years.
After retirement, they moved back to the farm in Peever where they enjoyed many years. Joyce was a member of the Peever Methodist Church.
Joyce had many passions in life-teaching, being a mother, her grandchildren, being a homemaker, and gardening. She had one sister Betty, who she remained very close to throughout her lifetime. Joyce was very kind and always thought of others before herself.

Four very special great grandsons, Jayden Hortness, Hunter Lahr, Griffin and Cooper Rouge.
