Katherine "Kathy" Birney

Katherine "Kathy" Birney, 58, of Watertown, passed away, Monday, September 15, 2025, at Prairie Lakes Hospital, Watertown.

Funeral services will be 10:30am Monday, September 22, 2025 at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster.

Visitation will be 2-4pm Sunday, closing with a rosary at the funeral home.

Katherine Ann Birney was born on August 11, 1967, to Dale and Yvonne (Lesnar) Birney at Webster, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Waubay. She attended school in Waubay and graduated from WHS in 1985. After high school, Kathy furthered her education at Northern State University in Aberdeen to study Elementary Education.

After college, Kathy returned to Waubay. In 1992, she and her partner Dennis Sapp welcomed their son, Bryan to the world. Kathy was a very proud mother. In the fall of 2009, Kathy moved to Jenkins Living Center in Watertown, where she resided until present time.

Kathy enjoyed playing cards and games such as BINGO and Farkle. She loved watching her soap operas, especially “As The World Turns” and “Guiding Light”. She also followed the shows “Survivor” and “Big Brother”. Her out-going personality came so natural to her. She was awarded the “Greeting Award” at Jenkins for greeting those coming to visit with a smile and warm hello. Above all else, Kathy loved her family. Family get-togethers and time spent visiting with each of them was her greatest joy! Kathy was a shining light and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She will be forever loved by her son Bryan Birney of Waubay, SD, her significant other Dennis Sapp of Waubay, SD, her parents Dale and Yvonne Birney of Waubay, SD, brothers Steven Birney of Lake Norden, SD, Scott (Angie) Birney of Hayti, SD, sister Sheila (Darin Nagelhout) Birney of Watertown, SD, nephews Spenser (Anna) Birney, Kolby Davis, Kaden Davis, and nieces Shelby Torstenson, Savanah (Myles Pekelder) Davis, Rachel Birney, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and her family at Jenkins. She was preceded in death by brother Keith Birney, sister Stephanie Birney, maternal grandparents Frank and Jeanette Lesnar, paternal grandparents Ronald and Inez Birney, and step-grandfather Leonard Osterhoff
