Lawrence Sauer

Lawrence Sauer, 89 of Webster died on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at Bethesda Home in Webster. His funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. Monday, October 1, 2012 at American Lutheran Church in Webster, Rev. Dani Jo Ninke officiating. Burial with Military Rites will be at Webster Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday 5-7 P.M. with a 7 P.M. prayer service. Lawrence Fred Sauer was born on Sunday, June 3, 1923 to Fred W. and Hannah (Pranky) Sauer on the Sauer family farm in Day County, South Dakota west of Webster. He was baptized and confirmed at American Lutheran Church in Webster. He attended country school, Webster elementary school, Boy Scout Troop 28 and graduated from Webster High School in 1943. He entered the Army Air Corps in June 1943 and served during World War II where he was stationed in the Pacific Theatre, on the Island of Palawan in the Philippines and the Occupation of Japan. He was honorably discharged in March 1946 and returned to Webster where he started Sauer Construction. He was united in marriage to Verona McCrea on May 28, 1955 at Webster. After their marriage the couple made their home in Webster where he continued to operate Sauer Construction. He retired in 1988 and in 1991, his son, Gary took over the business and Larry worked for him on a part-time basis. He was a member of American Lutheran Church where he served on the Church Council and the Property Committee. He belonged to the American Legion where he was a member of the Color Guard and V.F.W. He served as Commander of both organizations. Larry was on the Webster City Council for thirteen years, the W.E.B. Water Board, Webster Transportation Board, was a senior volunteer at the Kat’s Place and was able to travel on the World War II Honor Flight. He was a Scout Master of Boy Scout Troops 33 and received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest council volunteer award. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors, reading and playing cards. Larry passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at Webster, South Dakota at the age of 89 years, 3 months and 23 days. Survivors include his wife, Verona of Webster; one son, Gary (Connie) of Webster; one daughter, Carmen (Scott) Collins of Bagley, MN; three brothers, Luvern (Nadine) Sauer of Webster, SD, Leroy (Carol) Sauer of Santa Monica, CA and Kenneth Sauer of Watertown, SD; one sister, Gladys (Frank) Noble of Manchester, MO; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, two brothers and two sisters.
