Lori Pies, 57 of Milbank and formerly of Ortley died on Monday, April 17, 2017 at Milbank Health and Rehab after a two year battle with cancer. Her funeral will be at 10:30 A.M. Friday, April 21, 2017 at Ortley Free Lutheran Church in Ortley. Robert Grebel will officiate. Burial will be at Ortley Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday 5-7 P.M. with a 6 P.M. prayer service. Lori Lynn (Woods) Pies, 57, formerly of Ortley, SD, passed away April 17th, 2017, at Golden Living Center in Milbank, SD after a 2 year battle with cancer. She was born September 24th, 1959, in Watertown, SD to Jerald and Janice Woods. She later moved with her family to California. A few years later, they moved back to South Dakota. Lori was put into foster care and lived with several different families, including Mr. & Mrs. Arnold Berger of Waubay and Mr. & Mrs.Walter Rickards of Summit. Lori attended Waubay and Summit schools, graduating from Summit in 1977. That summer she met Joel Pies and later married on April 15th, 1978. They lived on Dale Miller's farm east of Ortley and later moved to to Clifford Pies' old farm northeast of Hurricane Lake. In January of 1987, they moved to Ortley, SD, where she lived until moving to Milbank in 2010. She was employed by Trevette's Cafe in Milbank, SD, where she worked upon graduating high school. She was also employed by Northern Con-Agg in 1989 where she worked for 13 years. Lori enjoyed cooking, making sausage, working with plastic canvass, being a Cub scout and Girl Scout leader, and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Joel J. Pies. She is survived by 2 brothers: Steve (Diane) Woods of Milbank, SD and Michael Woods of Watertown, SD; a sister: Cindy Hauck of Georgia; 4 children: Jason (Tanya) Pies of Ellendale, ND; Becky (Chris) Hinkelman of Summit, SD; Erica (Brian) Eck of Berkeley, CA; and Herschel (Brittany) Pies of Ortley, SD. She also has 8 grandchildren.
