Marvin Mathiason

April 27, 1929 — July 1, 2025

Marvin Henry Mathiason, 96, of Webster, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2025, at Bethesda Nursing Home in Webster. A devoted husband, father, educator, and lifelong learner, Marvin lived a life grounded in faith, family, and quiet perseverance.

Born on April 27, 1929, Marvin grew up during a time of economic hardship that shaped his worldview and instilled in him a sense of resilience and hard work. He was baptized and confirmed at American Lutheran Church.

Marvin pursued his passion for education at Northern State College, earning his Elementary Education Degree in 1965. He was an avid reader and a lifelong student, continuing his studies through numerous post-graduate courses. His career in education took him and his family across several cities —including Sisseton, Eagle Butte, and Wahpeton—before returning home to Webster for retirement.

Marvin served in the army and was stationed in Germany from 1951 to 1953.

On November 26, 1958, Marvin married Clarice Stave of Pierpont, South Dakota. Together, they shared 66 years of marriage, raising four children. Home was wherever their journey took them.

In addition to his work in education, Marvin found great joy in working on the family farm outside of Webster. Marvin also enjoyed an annual camping trip with the families. Hunting was also a passion with a focus on enjoying being outside. Marvin will be remembered for his quiet strength and the legacy of his family that he touched through his work and example.

Survivors include his wife Clarice, one daughter Marianne Helgeson (Lonnie), three sons, EuDale (Jodi), Jay (Deb) and Delray. He is also survived by one brother EuGene, 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Bertha, two brothers Harvey and Kenneth, daughter in law Rhonda Mathiason and one grandchild Amanda Rasmussen.

The funeral will be on Monday, July 7th at 10:30am at the American Lutheran Church. The Rev. Ray Dunn will officiate. Military interment will be at the Webster Cemetery. The viewing will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service on Sunday July 6th from 2:00 to 4:00pm.
