Nadine V. Smeins

Nadine Smeins, 95 of Pierpont died Friday November 9, 2012 at Sundial Manor in Bristol. Her funeral will be 10:00 A.M. Monday November 12, 2012 at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster. Pastor Eugene Moeller will officiate. Burial will be in the Homer Cemetery near Pierpont. Visitation will be 5 to 7 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Nadine V. Johnson was born on Wednesday March 14, 1917 to J. Clifford and Effie (Kraai) Johnson on the Johnson family farm in Homer Township near Pierpont, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at the Presbyterian Church in Pierpont. She attended school in Pierpont graduating in 1933. After her education Nadine went to work cooking for various farmers in the area. On August 22, 1936, she married Bill Smeins at Britton, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple moved to Fargo, North Dakota for one year and the returned to the Pierpont area in Union Township where they farmed for many years until their retirement. The couple celebrated 57 years of marriage. Bill passed away on July 7, 1994. Nadine continued to live on the farm until 2004 when she moved to the Pierpont Apartments. In 2007 she moved to the Johnson Center in Bristol until last year when she entered Sundial Manor where she lived until her passing. Nadine was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Pierpont where she was an Elder and taught Sunday school. “Grandma Dean” (as all of her grandchildren called her), enjoyed sewing, cooking, square dancing, reading, and especially spending time with her family. She is survived by one son: Alan (Mavis) Smeins of Pierpont, SD, three daughters: Judith (Don) Voss of Watertown, SD, Barb (Jim) Tompkins of Webster, SD, and Diane (Richard) Ackerson of Aberdeen, SD, one brother: Dale (Freda) Johnson of Zapata, TX, eight grandchildren, two step grandchildren, 17 great- grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, one sister, and two great-grandsons.
