LaVina was born to Fred and Marie Goetz on March 27, 1923 in Java , SD. She graduated from Java High School where she excelled in all academics and participated in declamatory competition placing first in their division and representing Java at the state tournament for 3 consecutive years.

After graduating from high school, she moved to Webster where she met the love of her life, David Wattier. On September 27, 1944, they were married at St. Otto’s Catholic Church in Webster, SD. To this union, 4 children were born. Together, they celebrated every day of their 68 years of marriage.

As a young couple they made their home on the Wattier farm south of Webster. Having never lived on a farm , LaVina embraced all the joys and hard work that went into being the wife and partner of a farmer. LaVina was an amazing cook. David was never short of help when it came time for haying or harvest as everyone knew they were sure to enjoy her cooking skills. Her children and grandchildren have taken over her tradition of making authentic German food. Her gardens and flowers were surpassed by none. Spring was her favorite time of the year, the time when everything was new and fresh again. She loved to sew, spending many nights sewing a new dress for one of her daughter’s school dances or some special occasion. Like magic that dress would appear in the closet the next morning.

Once her children were all in school, she decided to try her hand at retail. She started working at Nerger’s Department Store in 1963. Somehow she managed to work and still keep up with all the demands of raising a family and the endless tasks of the farm . She enjoyed her customers and never tired of helping them with their purchases.

After retiring from farming, she continued to plant more garden and flowers, keeping them both busy with the work they loved. After moving into Webster, she still managed to grow beautiful flowers every summer, winning her a Lawn of the Week award.

Her grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her much love, joy and life. She looked forward to the times when the house was filled with their laughter. It was nothing for her to play hide and seek, knowing all the good places that the kids were sure to easily find her.

She will be missed beyond words. Her love of life and laughter made everyone’s life complete. She was proceeded in death by her husband; David, daughter; Maria Evans, parents, sister; Violet, and brothers; Erwin, Clarence and Orvis.

Survivors include her sister; Arlene Crayne, son; Mike Wattier (Jeanne), daughter; Jane Heinz (Tom), daughter; Kathy Wattier Vogel, grandchildren; Ericka, Chad, Barrett, Brandon, Shayne, great grandchildren; Autumn, Annika, Liam, CeCe, Truman, Brandon Jr., Brooklin, Blake, Emily, Ashley, Zack, Cody and Ethan.
