Oris Olson, 80 of Waubay died Thursday March 10, 2011 at his home in Waubay. His funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. Monday, March 14, 2011 at Fiksdal Funeral Chapel in Webster, Rev. Janet Miller will officiate. Burial will be at a later date at New Helgen Cemetery near Florence. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Monday. Oris James Olson was born on May 13, 1930 at Webster, South Dakota to Otis and Clara (Schulz) Olson. He was baptized and confirmed at Helgen Lutheran Church near Florence, South Dakota. Oris was raised in Day County and attended grade school at District 214. In 1944, the family moved to a farm in Codington County. He graduated from Florence High School in 1948. In 1951, Oris enlisted in the US Marines and was stationed in Korea until his discharge in 1954. After serving his country, Oris returned home and farmed with his dad and worked other jobs in the area. In 1963 he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota and worked for Louis DeGidio as a technician. In 1964, he met Marilyn Thompson and on May 31, 1978 they were united in marriage at Milbank, South Dakota. In 1991 the couple moved to Eden, South Dakota to be closer to his sister Janet and in 1993 they moved to Waubay, South Dakota. After Marilyn passed away in 2006, he continued to live in Waubay with his sister Janet and her husband Darrell. Oris enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching The Lawrence Welk Show, reading, spending time with is cats and dog. Every day he looked forward to Tootie Berger coming over for a cup of coffee to reminisce about old times. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He also was a Pipefitters Union member in Minneapolis. Oris passed away peacefully at Waubay South Dakota at the age of 80 years, 10 months, and He is survived by his sister, Janet (Darrell) Schmidt of Waubay, SD, sister-in-law, Barbara (Conrad) Plasier of SiouxFalls, SD, and many nieces and nephews. Blessed be the memory of Oris J. Olson. Casket Bearers will be his nieces and nephews ,Renae Knudson,Pat Olson,Denise Schwinger,Jackie Mahlen,Thomas Olson,James Weyh , Jr.Jerry Weyh,Jason Weyh, and Jared Weyh.
