He attended Catholic school in Grenville, SD and high school in Roslyn, SD, graduating from Roslyn High School with the Class of 1974. Following graduation, Rick began employment with the Milwaukee Railroad and continued working on the family farm. He then hauled freight for some time before starting his own livestock trucking company, Ewalt Trucking. In January of 2016, Rick suffered a life-threatening aortic tear which required many, many months of recovery. His life was filled with happiness as well as great trials and sadness, but through it all he never lost his gentle kindness or spirit of gratitude. He was especially overwhelmed by the enormous support shown to him from community, friends, and family when he needed it most. Faith, family, and friendships made throughout the years were most important to Rick. He also held a special place in his heart for his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as his animals. Before his illness, Rick was a true outdoorsman at heart. He loved hunting and checking the fields. He also enjoyed many years of league bowling. More recently, he enjoyed watching NASCAR and old Western shows and movies and visiting with family and friends. He will truly be missed. Blessed to have shared Rick’s life are his siblings: Catherine McLagan of Hutchinson, MN, Jim (Sue) Ewalt of Mason City, IA, Barb Hartl of Hutchinson, MN, Teri Ewalt (Ron Jaspers) and Credan Ewalt, both of Webster, SD and Becky Smith of Aberdeen; his nephews: Corey McLagan, Nathan (Angie) Ewalt, Chris Ewalt (Kelli Meland) and Brady (Marleena) Smith; his nieces: Carla (Jared) Burkstrand, Heather (Matt) Kaasa, Kasandra (Steve) Hauck, Amy (Jeff) McKay, Vanessa (Nathan) Bloom and Ashley (Craig) Baumgarn; 16-great nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends. Rick is preceded in death by his parents, Valery and Helen; his infant sister, Patricia; brothers-in-law: Terry Smith, Chuck McLagan and Jim Hartl; his niece, Carri; four great-nieces and great-nephews; and many other relatives.
