Verona Sauer

Verona Sauer 84, of Webster died Sunday February 16, 2014 at Bethesda Home in Webster. Her funeral will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 21, 2014 at American Lutheran Church in Webster, Rev. Jan FitzGibbon officiating. Burial will be in the Webster Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home in Webster on Thursday 5-7 P.M. and prior to services on Friday. Verona Lorraine McCrea was born on Sunday, April 21, 1929 to Kenneth and Margaret (Schwandt) McCrea on the family farm in Kilborn Township, Grant County near Twin Brooks, South Dakota. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Corona. She attended school near her home and graduated from Corona High School in 1946. She then attended Northern State Teacher’s College in Aberdeen, and also colleges in Colorado and California where she received her teaching degree. She taught rural schools near Twin Brooks and Corona and then school in LaBolt. In 1952 she moved to Webster and began teaching first grade in the elementary school. On May 28, 1955 she was united in marriage to Lawrence Sauer at Webster, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple continued to live in Webster where she taught school until 1959 when she retired from teaching to begin raising a family. In 1989 she began working at the Alco store where she worked for fifteen years until retirement. Lawrence passed away in 2012. She entered Bethesda Home in September 2012. She was a member of American Lutheran Church in Webster where she was active in W.E.L.C.A. and Circle. She also taught Sunday School and was also Sunday School Superintendent. She also taught confirmation class and release time. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and Day County Extension Club , was a Cub Scout Den Leader and a Girl Scout Leader. She also was a A.R.C. Volunteer and ran a Friday Respite Care for A.R.C. Verona passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Webster, South Dakota at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 26 days. Survivors include a son, Gary (Connie) Sauer of Webster, SD; a daughter, Carmen (Scott) Collins of Thief River Falls, MN; two brothers, Melborne McCrea and Orgene (Karen) McCrea both of Twin Brooks, SD; two sisters, Verda McCrea and Violette (Lester) Schimmel both of Twin Brooks, SD; three grandchildren, Andrew Sauer of U.S.A.F. in Germany, Jacob Sauer of Webster, SD and Aaron Collins of Thief River Falls, MN; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and an infant daughter, Grace.
