William “Bill” Roger Lightfield was born on September 5, 1935 to Ernie and Ludmily (Docekal) Lightfield in Dupree, SD. He graduated from Dupree High School.  Bill married the love of his life, Wanda Tesch on September 8th, 1957 at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Watertown, SD.  They had a loving marriage of over 64 years and were members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Waubay.

Early on, Bill and Wanda lived in Deadwood and Howard then moved to Waubay to raise their family of 6 children.  It was a proud day when Bill purchased the Standard Oil Station on Highway 12.  Civic duty was a priority as he volunteered and was mayor of Waubay.  Later, the family moved to Tilden, NE, and then Cedar Falls, IA while their last three children finished school.  Bill drove truck until his retirement, and then they returned to the home they built in Waubay.

Bill had a deep love for and loyalty to his family.  He doled out tickles and teases to the delight of his treasured grandkids and great grandkids. He inspired them to work hard and play hard. Being mechanically gifted, Bill loved a challenge and found joy in a job well done.  There wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix.  During family visits, it wasn’t uncommon to find him fixing an appliance or helping with a repair under the hood of a car.  He also loved fishing, playing cards, building willow furniture, and reading a good book.  Most of all, he loved his wife Wanda and always took great care of her especially when she developed Alzheimer’s.

It’s with heavy hearts that we share the sorrow of Bill’s passing.  He joined his maker on Tuesday, February 15th, 2022 at the age of 86.  Though he will be missed, his family is grateful that he passed peacefully, surrounded by Wanda and his loved ones.

He will be forever loved by his wife Wanda, children Yvonne (Mike) Morris of Des Moines, IA, Sybil Lightfield of Carson, ND, Adam Lightfield of Conifer, CO, Wannita Lightfield of Waubay, SD, and Edward Lightfield of Minneapolis, MN, daughter-in-law Denise (Tim) Lightfield of Waubay, SD, sister Cora (Kenneth) Jefferies, sisters-in-law Vi Lightfield and Ardith Lightfield; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Tim Lightfield, daughter-in-law Teresa Lightfield, brothers: Jim, Earnie, and Wayne Lightfield, and sister: Florence Schuler.
