Due to the “great depression” of the 1930’s, the family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where her father got a job building tractors at Minneapolis Moline. While in Minneapolis they were members of Bethany Lutheran Church and she attended Sunday School there. She attended Simmons Public School, kindergarten through the 6th grade and in 1943 the family moved back to South Dakota where she attended Gem country school District 153 in the 7th and 8th grade. She graduated from Webster High School in 1949 and then Northern State Teacher’s College in Aberdeen and became eligible to teach in a rural school, which she did for several years. On January 1, 1950 she married Donald Tvinnereim at Tabor Lutheran Church, Rev. E.S. Vik officiating. Their first home was a three room farm house with no electricity and water from an outside cistern. Later they bought their first farm from Bert Handlen. They became proud parents of four beautiful daughters, Donna, Marie, Joan and Kristie. In 1963 they bought the Herman Waller farm and moved south of Webster. She began working at Northwestern Bell Telephone in 1962 and worked there until the business office closed and then one year at Security Bank. She also worked at Bethesda Home for almost fifteen years until retirement. In addition to her other jobs Winnie managed and recorded each and every transaction in the family owned business, Tvinnereim Livestock. She always had fresh coffee and homemade treats for any livestock buyer, seller, or trucker that came thru the door! In 1965 the family joined St. John’s Lutheran Church, she became a life-long member of the Senior Choir, Lydia Circle and W.E.L.C.A. In 1971 she received the Clerk of the Year award from the Webster Chamber of Commerce. She was also a member of the Senior Websterian and Sons of Norway. Winnie’s greatest joy was spending time with her children and spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She made quilts for all of them and also said “they weren’t fancy, but every stitch was full of love for them.” She liked to bake and share with others and have lunches together.
