Serving your family since 1924

Fiksdal Funeral Service was started in 1924 by Lars J. Fiksdal as an addition to his General Merchandise Store. Mr. Fiksdal was not a licensed embalmer so it was managed by S. H. Albers.

In 1927 Johan Richmond "Rich" Fiksdal came back after graduating from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago to join his father (Lars) in business. In February 1928 Lars suffered a severe stroke and passed away in May. Rich managed the funeral business along with the general store until he purchased both businesses in January 1929.

Fiksdal Funeral Service (South Dakota Establishment No. 1) was operated out of the rear of the General Store, which eventually was turned into a furniture store. The funeral service had its own outside entrance and was very adequate for what Rich termed "an alternate to having visitation in the family home" which was prevalent in the early 1900's. As with many funeral homes, an ambulance service was also a part of the business until the early 1970's.

In 1978 Rich purchased a former implement building in downtown Webster and remodelled it into a new funeral facility which was dedicated in December 1979. The new facility located at 122 West Fifth Avenue has a modern chapel, visitation rooms, business office, arrangement office, preparation room and large garage.

Rich Fiksdal passed away suddenly in December of 1984 at the age of 84, with 57 years of activity in funeral service. During his lifetime he acquired the Knott Brothers Funeral Home in Bristol, a supply of caskets from Monshaugen Furniture Store in Roslyn and purchased and operated Waubay Funeral Service in Waubay until 1965.

In 1985 Fiksdal Funeral Service was purchased by David L. and Peggy Ninke of Webster. Dave had worked with Fiksdal's since he was a freshman in high school.

2005 saw more changes for our funeral home with the addition of a new chapel, foyer area and a downstairs lounge and coffee area. It was formally opened in December 2005 to better serve our families.

In 2018,long time empoyee/funeral director Shauna Kjos-Miotke and husband Jamie purchased the funeral home from David and Peggy Ninke. They strive to continue the Fiksdal/Ninke tradition of serving all faiths with the utmost respect and dignity.
